Couple Arrested For Taking Instagram Photos Mooning Sacred Thai Temple

Recommended Posts

A gay U.S. couple were arrested in Thailand after taking photos of themselves exposing their butts at sacred Buddhist temples.

Joseph and Travis Dasilva have a now-deleted Instagram account titled “Traveling Butts,” which finds them pulling down their pants for pics at international tourist destinations. But the 38-year-olds upset locals with their latest stunt when they decided to moon Bangkok’s Wat Arun and Wat Pho temples.

Buddhist sites in Thailand have signs up that remind people to dress modestly and to cover their shoulders and legs if possible, so the men taking their pants down in these locations was considered an intense sign of disrespect.

The men were arrested at the airport while getting ready to return to San Diego, according to BBC. They were taken to the Bangkok Yai police station where they were charged with public nudity—a criminal offense making them liable for a fine up to 5,000 baht.

“Once they are through with the charges, the Thai immigration police will revoke their visas and push for deportation,” deputy spokesman of the Thai immigration police Col Choengron Rimpadee told the BBC. “They will also be blacklisted from coming back to Thailand.”

San Diego city commissioner Nicole Murray-Ramirez told the San Diego Gay and Lesbian News that the couple reached out to her for help, adding, “Though I am very disappointed in their actions, I am talking to US government officials to see what assistance we can give them.”
