Hip-hop was ALWAYS more popular than pop music lbr

i think rap was always more popular than pop since the mid 2000s. it's just that now via streaming the true popularity of music is apparent, whereas genres with less tech-savvy and less bootlegging fans were at an advantage (pop music listened to by teenage girls who've never heard of pirate bay/are scared the fbi will knock at their door, adult contemporary stuff like norah jones or adele where soccer moms listen to it, dad rock stuff, country stuff...).

the most pirated albums of the late 2000s were all rap albums. so with the new streaming rules, it is now apparent what was always the case: rap is more popular than cookie cutter pop

rap has been the most popular genre for a very long time. It's the easiest genre to break into the music scene with. It's the most stagnant genre, only just recently showing any signs of evolution. Punchlines, bars, and beats cater to the short attention span and instant gratification era of society that the internet age ushered in.

You can have a very mediocre rap song and watch it magically become a hit thanks to memes. This doesn't happen with other genres.

It was a matter of time

We been knew. Gaga changed the game and made pop music popular... it will only be a matter of time before pop takes over again :demifat:
